Former President Trump raised Brazil's tariff rate sharply to 50% citing the trial of his predecessor.
On July 10, Jin10 reported that Trump announced on Wednesday that he plans to impose a 50% tariff on Brazil, partly due to the treatment of Bolsonaro, the former Brazilian president who has been dubbed the "Brazilian Trump." In April, Trump announced what he called reciprocal tariffs, under which Brazil would only face a minimum tariff of 10%. In a recent letter regarding the tariffs, Trump told current Brazilian President Lula, "Brazil's treatment of former president Bolsonaro... is an international disgrace." Trump has fiercely defended Bolsonaro, who faces charges of conspiring to overturn the results of the 2022 election. "This trial should not be taking place," Trump added. Trump also accused the Brazilian government of "insidiously attacking free elections and the fundamental free speech rights of Americans," including censoring "American social media platforms." Trump stated that the relationship with Brazil is far from mutually beneficial and concluded, "Please understand, 50% is far below the number needed for a fair competitive environment that we must have with your country."
