Co-founder of Solana, Anatoly Yakovenko, sparked controversy by calling memecoin and NFT "digital trash" and lacking intrinsic value, despite them accounting for a large portion of the revenue on the Solana network. In a post on X, Yakovenko compared memecoin and NFT to loot boxes in free-to-play games, with value only determined by the market. Although he acknowledged that Solana could not succeed without memecoin, he still argued that they do not provide real value.

This statement has faced criticism from the cryptocurrency community, claiming that he "mocked" his own users. According to infrastructure company Syndica, memecoin accounted for 62% of dApp revenue from Solana in June and contributed significantly to the $1.6 billion revenue in the first half of 2025. Platforms like Pump.fun, PumpSwap, and LetBonk are the main sources generating this cash flow.
